Common Myths & Facts:
MYTH: My Type of Hearing Loss Cannot
Be Helped
FACT: The most common form of hearing
loss is sensorineural, or nerve deafness.
In almost all cases nerve deafness can be
helped through properly fit hearing aids.
Other types of hearing loss are often medically
treatable or may also be helped with hearing
aids. The only way to know if you can be helped
is to be evaluated by an Audiologist or Licensed
Hearing Specialist. If your loss is medically
treatable, or if their is any indication of
a medical condition, they will refer you to
an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor for further
evaluation. Sometimes the problem is as simple
as too much earwax!
MYTH: Hearing Aids Will Restore My
Hearing to Normal
FACT: Hearing aids cannot restore
your hearing to normal, or stop the progression
of nerve deafness. As their name suggests,
they can only aid your hearing, whatever its
condition. Today's digital technology is able
to help far more than hearing aids even just
a few years ago.
MYTH: My Hearing Problem Isn't Bad
Enough to Need Two Hearing Aids
FACT: Your body's hearing mechanism
relies on input from both ears to locate sound
sources, and focus on specific sounds and
conversations. Studies show that those that
wear two hearing aids understand more clearly,
especially at a distance, and enjoy better
overall sound quality. If you have a hearing loss in both ears, you should wear two hearing aids.
MYTH: The Latest Digital Hearing
Aids can Automatically Eliminate Unwanted
Background Noise.
FACT: Todays digital hearing aids
do a tremendous job making it more comfortable
for you to listen in noise. They cannot selectively
cancel out noise that you perceive as unwanted.
Only our brains are capable of making that
distinction. Hearing aids would have to be
able to "know your thoughts" to
decide what was wanted and unwanted sound.
Just how effective your hearing aids are at
managing sound depends on the circuitry used,
the severity of your hearing loss, how accurately
the instrument was fit, and your ability and
patience as you relearn to hear with amplified
sound.
MYTH: Hearing Aids Are Too Expensive
FACT: Cost is relative to the perceived
value you get from your hearing aids. The
most important "investment" is your
attitude and willingness to work through adapting
to your hearing aids. For many, the improved
quality of life and relationships make hearing
aids one of the best investments they ever
made.
MYTH: "Bargain" Hearing
Aids Work Just As Well As The Expensive Ones.
FACT: Direct to you mail order or
online aids leave out a very critical component:
The expertise and care of a trained professional.
In some states this has become such a problem
that selling hearing aids direct to the consumer
is illegal. At Aidright, we believe it is
irresponsible and dangerous for anyone to
sell you a hearing aid without being able
to provide proper care and counseling. That's
why we insist on involving a hearing professional
in your area to make certain that you receive
the quality care you deserve. That is also
why we only distribute products from companies
that have demonstrated an ongoing commitment
to providing quality hearing products.
MYTH: I'm Too Old (or Young !) To
Benefit From Hearing Aids.
FACT: Almost everyone relies on hearing
to communicate and connect with others in
your world. Hearing loss affects people of
all ages and you are never too old (our oldest
patient was 104!) or too young to need help.
When people decide not to get the help they
need they are sending a message to those around
them: You're just not important enough for
me to try to improve our communication.
MYTH: Wearing a Hearing Aid is a
Sign of Old Age.
FACT: Actually, your hearing loss
is probably more noticeable. Let's face it,
constantly saying "what ?" and "huh
?" don't do much to dispel the notion
that your getting older. But being an active
participant in life, catching the punchline
(and laughing at the right time), or actually
hearing those sweet nothings whispered in
your ear make you feel and appear young.
Hearing Aids are for "Old"
People
Probably one of the biggest impediments
to people getting help for hearing loss is
the belief that only "old" people
wear hearing aids, and that others will think
you are old. Hearing loss is no respector
of age. Many people develop hearing loss in
their 40's and 50's as a result of noise exposure
in their earlier years, medically related
causes, or genetic predisposition. Age really
doesn't matter. What matters is that if you
do have a hearing loss you do something about
it. Bottom line - it won't take care of itself.
Other People Will See It
This is another major reason people won't
get the help they need for hearing loss -
They think they have to wear a huge apparatus on their ears. The reality is that today's hearing aids are both technologically
and cosmetically far more advanced than hearing
aids of even 10 years ago. If you fear that you will have
to wear an unsightly piece of hardware
that everyone will notice, think
again. Let AidRight's professionals introduce you
to a discreet and cosmetically appealing
solution to hearing loss
Finances
The most common reason people give for not buying hearing aids they really need is the high cost. A better question might be, “How much is your hearing loss costing you?”
According to Dr. Sergei Kochkin of the Better Hearing Institute, wearing a hearing aid can increase your salary by up to $12,000. Dr. Kochkin found that people with hearing loss that do not use hearing aids lose twice as much income as those who have hearing loss and wear hearing aids. Rather than a burdensome expenditure, purchasing a hearing aid can be a valuable investment.
