The receiver is in the ear canal and is attached to the hearing aid by a thin wire. The microphone is in a small hearing aid behind the ear. The sound is sent through the wire to the receiver.  This design allows for more power in a smaller BTE hearing aid.  Power hearing aid users can now have an instrument that provides advanced performance and it looks good too!
